- Vote NO on the Newhouse (R-WA) #145 National Wolf Delisting Amendment: This amendment would block all Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections for the gray wolf in the United States by 2017 (the Alaska wolf is not protected). The gray wolf continues to need federal protections. In all states where protections were lifted immediate wolf killing policies were implemented by each state. Until we can have states be responsible and until we know more about the destructive impact of the drastically increased killing policies and the increased poaching effect, the wolf still needs federal protection. A national delisting would set the wolf on a path toward extinction.
- Vote NO on the Pearce (R-NM) Mexican Gray Wolf Delisting Amendment: This amendment would block federal funding for the endangered Mexican gray wolf under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) even though there are fewer than 100 of these rare wolves left in the United States and fewer than 25 in Mexico. It would also limit recovery to “historic range,” even though the extent of that range is far from clear, and scientists say the Mexican wolf must have increased numbers released into the wild in new habitats to recover the necessary biodiversity to keep this species in existence.
- Vote YES on the Beyer (D-VA) #71: This amendment would effectively strike three damaging riders in the underlying bill that attempt to block recovery efforts and Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections for (1) gray wolf populations in Wyoming and the Great Lakes (Section 119), (2) the greater sage-grouse (Section 114), and (3) the lesser prairie-chicken (Section 445). The Wyoming/Midwest wolf delisting rider (Section 119) would block federal court decisions that restored federal protections in Wyoming and the Great Lakes region. These two federal court decisions found the states’ plans for recovering the wolf to be severely deficient, focused nearly exclusively upon killing the wolf and lacking in scientific credibility. Most importantly the amendment includes a “no judicial review” clause, thus stripping the ability of citizens to challenge these wolf delistings.
