2024 Elections and Candidate Information Center

Howling For Wolves is proud to offer information on candidates who ran for the Minnesota State Legislature (House and Senate) as well as for federal office representing Minnesota.

STATE OFFICIALS:

FIRST STEP: WHO REPRESENTS YOU? Identify your MN House and Senate district and candidates in one of two ways:

SECOND STEP: FIND HOW YOUR LEGISLATOR OR CANDIDATE (non-incumbent) VOTED OR WOULD VOTE.

VOTES OF CURRENT INCUMBENT LEGISLATORS:

  • Members of the 2023-2024 MN House of Representatives voted and passed an amendment to ban wolf hunting and trapping on April 17, 2023 - the top priority of Howling For Wolves. A "Yes" vote (to the left of the name) is supported by Howling For Wolves. The amendment was adopted by the full House but removed in the House/Senate Conference Committee.
  • The vote is reflected in the map below, and also listed by name below.

VOTES OF NON-INCUMBENTS:

We asked legislative challengers to complete a questionnaire. Responses received are below organized by legislative district number.

FEDERAL OFFICIALS:

Office of President and Vice President of the United States:

  • Kamala Harris: During her four years in the U.S. Senate, Harris consistently supported pro-animal bills and earned a lifetime score of 100+ on the federal U. S. Humane Society’s Scorecard, through her record and willingness to lead on these issues. Among other actions, she cosponsored bills to crack down on horse soring cruelty, ban public contact with big cats, reduce wildlife trafficking, strengthen federal laws against shark finning and tackle the scourge of doping in horse racing.
  • Tim Walz: As Governor of Minnesota, Walz said he supports a ban on wolf hunting in Minnesota. While a new state wolf plan was formed in his Department of Natural Resources that contains an option for a wolf hunt, Walz consistently sided with pro-wolf activists against wolf hunting.

Minnesota Members of Congress:

  • U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar: Klobuchar has supported a wolf hunting season in Minnesota. Most recently, she introduced and authored a bill, misleadingly named the “Northern Great Lakes Wolf Recovery Act” in the U.S. Senate. This bill would delist wolves in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and remove their Endangered Species Act protections. Howling For Wolves and other major environmental advocacy organizations strongly oppose this bill. When the minimum protections are removed by delisting wolves, MORE will be killed because wolf killing cannot be controlled. And for wolves, legal hunting leads to more illegal killing. Until states can protect wolves, they need federal protection.
  • As recently as April 30, 2024, Members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to end federal protections for wolves. All Republican members from Minnesota voted in support: Finstad, Emmer, Fischbach, Stauber. All Democratic members from Minnesota voted against it: Craig, Phillips, McCollum, Omar.
  • NOTE: DFL Congressman Dean Phillips did not run for re-election (unlike every other member of Congress from Minnesota). MN State Senator Dr. Kelly Morrison is the endorsed DFL candidate in the race, and she has voted to prohibit wolf hunting while in the MN Legislature.
