Wolves back on Endangered Species List with federal protections- Statement from Howling For Wolves

(St. Paul, Minn.) – Today U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White ruled that because wolf populations could not be sustained in the Midwest and portions of the West, that wolves would be placed back under federal protections of the Endangered Species List. This includes wolves in Minnesota and the Great Lakes area.

Dr. Maureen Hackett, founder and president of Howling For Wolves, a Minnesota-based wolf advocacy organization said in response:

“This is a fantastic decision for wolves as it protects them for future generations. While wolf trophy hunting has been stopped by the federal courts for the time being, it’s important for us to continue working on wolf plans that support effective and nonlethal conflict prevention strategies and enforcement of illegal poaching laws.

This relisting onto the federal Endangered Species List allows for time and space for work by people, policymakers, and agencies to achieve this important paradigm shift to nonlethal wolf plans.”
